Past Future Continuous

In an apartment in Tehran, surveillance cameras are installed in every room. Through their images, Maryam can follow the daily lives of her aging parents. In an intimate voice, Maryam reflects on the consequences of the fateful flight from Iran she had to make several decades ago, while her parents stayed behind.

Past Future Continuous is a quiet and beautiful film. The surveillance footage is interrupted by fleeting memories from the family’s video archive, and foreshadows an empty and gloomy future. It creates a poetic story about the wars of the past and the present pain of the family’s separation—a story it’s difficult not to be touched by.

The documentary won an award at IDFA, and comes from directors Morteza Ahmadvand and Firouzeh Khosrovani. The film is a co-production with the production company Norwegian Antipode, which also co-produced Academy Award winner No Other Land.

After the screening March 5, there will be a Q&A with the directors.

Due to the war in Iran, the directors are unfortunately unable to attend the festival. Naghmeh Samini, who co-wrote the script for the film, will be attending in their place.
