The sea is rising in the American South. In this cinematically striking portrait, we follow two young people who are slowly losing the only life they know when their island disappears underwater.
Howard and Juliette have lived with their uncle since their parents died, and live a free life close to nature on the island of Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana. But now the US authorities have decided that everyone on the island must move, and the two of them must get used to the idea of a completely different life.
The resignation and the melancholy of losing their childhood home, together with the beautiful observational photography, create an almost dreamlike atmosphere, and by being so close to the two of them, you get to feel the consequences of climate change on your own body.
The film is both aesthetically and thematically reminiscent of The Beast of the Southern Wild from 2012, which based its fictional story on Isle de Jean Charles, only this time it is reality.
