Regi: Lucrecia Martel
Masterful film about indigenous people in Argentina from iconic Lucrecia Martel.
This film takes us to the green plains and lush hillsides along the Andes Mountains in northern Argentina. People have lived here for centuries, but voices in Argentine society have long tried to silence the existence of the country’s indigenous people. Iconic Lucrecia Martel is a renowned filmmaker with a distinctive style, who has so far only worked with fiction. Her first documentary has thrilled audiences worldwide.
The starting point for Martel’s masterful documentary is a reconstruction of a shooting incident, in which the Chuchagasta indigenous people fight for justice for Javier Chocobar, one of their leaders. He was shot and killed when people who claimed their territory tried to expel them from their own land. The film questions the very idea of land ownership. We get to intimately know the Cuchagasta people and the constant threat from the colonial power under which they have lived.
