Mai Khoi and the Dissidents
Vietnamese pop star is forced into exile when she criticizes the authorities.
The tension is palpable when we follow singer Mai Khoi, “Vietnam’s Lady Gaga”, in the recording of her latest album, “Dissent”, an album she knows she has to leave the country before she releases. As one of Vietnam’s biggest stars, the authoritarian one-party state’s eye is constantly on her as she becomes increasingly vocal in her criticism of the lack of freedom of expression.
The documentary shows the unique courage required when she is repeatedly censored, but despite the dramatic personal consequences refuses to be silenced.
